Physical Computing Strategy to Support Students’ Coding Literacy: An Educational Experiment with Arduino Boards

The purpose of this study is to explore the influence introduction physical computing strategy Arduino Boards in a program design course on coding literacy and effectiveness application technical high school students. This selected two classes twelfth-grade students enrolled at Southern Taiwan as samples. One class was control group (43 students), other experimental (42 students). During 18-week course, carried out DBL (design-based learning) programming project, project using boards. Pre- posttests questionnaire survey were out, while ANCOVA (analysis covariance) used for evaluation purposes. In randomly semi-structured interviews understand their learning status perform qualitative analysis summarization. proposed boards, featuring staged teaching content, practical activities, real themes problem-solving tasks. results show that different groups significantly improved. However, programming, had higher efficiency than those group. Moreover, according student interviews, boards found improve students’ motivation learn aid systematically guiding toward improving by combining with theory. Thus, technology can be effectively abilities operational thinking practically applying theories.
